How many people have died during eruptions of Kilauea? Have any
researchers/scientists died? Have any visitors died?
In 1790, about 80 Hawaiian warriors (and family members) died during a
steam-driven explosive eruption. In 1924, a photographer was killed by a
boulder during an explosive eruption. No researchers/scientists have
died. However, in 1985 a geologist was burned when a lava levee on which
he was standing gave way. Due to his excellent physical health, the
quick action of a nearby friend, and quick transport to the hospital, he
later reached full recovery. A visitor died in 1993 in a bench
collapse. He was in an area closed by the park.
