Kaimu, September of 1990

In 1990, lava flows, fed by a tube system that extended 7.5 miles (12 km) from the Kupaianaha vent, entered the Kalapana area and later reached Kaimu. In all, 105 homes and structures were destroyed. This photo, taken in September of 1990, shows lava flows extending into the west end of the bay.
