Like a bad burrito, volcanoes can generate large amounts of unpleasant gas.
Volcanic gasses are mainly sulfur-based and stain the air with the stench of
rotten eggs. Besides being unpleasant to smell, these gasses can trigger
asthmatic attacks and other breathing problems. The gas is mainly emitted near
the summit and at eruption sites, with a small amount being given off by the
active flow itself. The gas is usually dispersed by the tradewinds, but can get
pretty bad on windless days.
