Pococatepetl Adventure - 1999

Text by Ivan Poul

Hi Friends,

My name is Ivan. I live in the Czech Republic in the middle of Europe. In July 1999, I was in Mexico at the Exposciencias International (EXPO - International Students' Exhibition) in Puebla City.

One day, I decided to go with my friends to the Popocatepetl Volcano. In the center of Puebla City, we caught a taxi, and I asked the driver in English if it is possible to go to Pococatepetl Volcano. He could only speak Spanish. So I had to speak Spanish and I can speak only a few words. After some minutes, he understood to go to the Pococatepetl Volcano.

After about one hour, the little micro-bus (typical old Volkswagen) came to the hills. We went through some villages. A few meters later, the road became a dry river valley. Some times we had to push the bus. After one km, the bus decided not to go with us, so the bus went alone, and we ran behind it. After a while the driver didn't know how to get to Pococatepetl. We had to pay him and went alone without a compass and without a map. The sky got grey and it began to rain. The volcano was in the clouds. We saw nothing.

After a three hour long walk through deep forests and bushes, we stayed in a little cottage. One gentleman brought us to the Paso de Cortez. In that time the sky was clear and we had a fantastic view of Popocatepetl. We wanted to go near the volcano, but it was not possible because the volcano was active. It was guarded by the security, and no one could go near it. After two hours, we went to the village and a good gentleman brought us to Cholula.
