What others have said about VolcanoWorld...
- On March 27, 2001 Jessica commented: Hello! I am 13
years old. I really like your variety of information and concepts.
I'm happy to tell you that with your help, I received exactly what
I'd been looking for my science fair project on cinder cone volcanoes.
It took me quite a while to actually find this web page and all the
info you put into it, and I thank you greatly for the large amount of
help. I wish more people had this much information in their web pages.
Thank you again!

I am a 8th grade science teacher who is currently teaching geology.
My classes are beginning a research project on volcanoes, and I was searching
the web for some sites that my students could utilize. I found your site, and
I was literally blown away. It's amazing! I visited your awards page and
congratulations! You deserve all of those awards and many more! I wish there
were such thorough and outstanding sites out there for every topic of
science that I teach. Thank you for your excellent site!
- On March 23, 2001 Charlotte commented:
I'm a student studying a degree course in Geology, and I am forever
searching through sites related to this subject. I have to say that I
think your site is one of the most outstanding sites I have ever seen.
It's also brilliant that you make subjects like this fun to learn for
younger people and let them have somewhere to send their drawings
and questions to. I only wish that I had this kind of technology
available back when I was 8! Keep up this fantastic site.
- On February 20, 2001 A Reader commented:
G'day from Australia. I have a four year old who is fascinated with
volcanoes, pyroclastic flows, etc. I have found this site very
educational helping to bring me up to speed on volcanoes so
I am on the same level as my son. (Which is quite scary that a 4 year
old knows more than I do!) Thank you for the interesting pictures
and easy explanations into this fascinating subject.
- On January 31, 2001 Azlina commented:
I'm helping both my daughters to do a research/project (for grade 3)
on volcanoes. This is really a fantastic "place" to gather information.
We have learned so much since the past week or so just by browsing
thru this site. Keep up the good work.
- On January 26, 2001 Karen commented:
I found your site to be extremely helpful. My sister lives on the island
of Java in Indonesia not far from Mt. Merapi so I appreciate being kept up
to date on the volcano's activity. You site offers a great deal of
information which wasn't included in the news broadcasts.
- On January 21, 2001 Susan commented:
As a first year teacher, this site is a great place to supplement my
knowledge on volcanoes. I can't wait to share this site with my
students! Thank you.

Every parent's nightmare...the school project...subject-volcanic eruptions.
Where do we find the most fantastic info? From you! Thanks for helping
a panic-stricken 34 yr. old Mom guide her 8 yr. old daughter through
all the facts. Love the color & pics! She was glued and hooked (watches
for Tom Brokaw's updates on Mt. Popo)! Thumbs way up!

I'm from Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. I got to know your site while
viewing a French programme on volcanoes (Les ecrans du savoir) where
vulcanologist Durieux was invited and praised this site. Immediately
after I visited it. Extremely interesting!!! I do hope Mauritian
primary teachers will come to know about this educational and creative
site. I have browsed for only a few minutes and for sure I will visit
VolcanoWorld again. We do have dormant volcanoes in Mauritius, the
most famous being Trou-aux-Cerfs. If I am not mistaken, even Tazieff
visited it.
- On December 14, 2000 Bob commented:
Your site definitely gets an A+. I live in the Denver, Colorado area.
Cinder cones have been active as recently as several thousand years ago
in the western part of the state. With Yellowstone to the north, New Mexico
and Arizona to the south and southwest, I am surrounded by a region
that has had major volcanic activity both historically (less than 1,000
years ago in New Mexico and Arizona) and prehistorically. This region of
the U.S. has potential for major eruptions in the future, too--perhaps
in my lifetime. VolcanoWorld is the best resource I have found for learning
all about this.
- On October 18, 2000 Jessica commented:
We have really enjoyed your entire Web site about volcanoes. We are
a homeschooling family and view your site as a great resource.
Thanks!
- On October 5, 2000 Dana commented:
Your Web site is awesome! I got almost all my information about Mt.
Saint Helens. I know more about volcanoes from your Web site. Thank you
for this wonderful Web site. One thing, you should put some volcano
games in this Web site.
- On October 3, 2000 Denise commented:
I love this Web site. I will be introducing it to my two sons ages 5
and 7 tonite after work. I have always been intersted in volcanoes!!
As a child I could never read enough about them. Now I hope my own children
will be just as curious. My husband is from Guatemala and we have taken them
there before. To see all the tops of the volcanoes decending into
Guatemala City during a flight was so amazing I had to videotape it!
Thanks for all the info on the volcanoes and thanks for having a section
devoted to kids!! They deserve it! :)
- On September 24, 2000 Mary commented:
Your site is on my favorites list. I have always been interested in volcanoes
because when I was 5, my aunt had a cottage on the slopes of Mauna Loa. In her
letters, she would tell stories about it. For child living in the Midwest
it was very exciting. I might say that was 64 years ago. When we visited
Hilo for the first time in 1986, we could barely see the glow of one of the
first eruptions from Puu Oo. On our second trip, we took a helicopter but
could only see a little stream coming from a tube into the ocean. Sometime
I would like to see a pahoehoe or an AA flow in action. Keep your stories
coming.
- On September 15, 2000 Maria commented:
You have a terrific site. This site really helped me with my Earth Science

- On September 14, 2000 Jamie commented:
Hey, nice site! Your site gives me all the information I want.
Because I would like to get into this field, I am here alot and
appreciate your information. Thanx.
- On September 12, 2000 Emile commented:
Congratulations on such a professional site. I have found your site
very useful for my Earth Science classes and its current events and
the students like this aspect above all others. I have been fascinated
with volcanoes since a child and for over thirty years have followed
in awe the daring exploits of the world famous vulcanologist,
Haroun Tazieff.
Also, teaching on the Island of Bougainville, PNG, I
had the opportunity for ten years living at Mabiri closeby to the active
volcanoes of Bagana and Balbi. During that time I experienced ash clouds
and at night, weather permitting, we could view the distant fireworks.
- On August 29, 2000 Gen commented:
Great Web site! I became interested in volcanoes after visiting the
Pico del Teide in the Canary Islands. The volcano pictures are great
and there is so much information (I do not have enough time to read so
much as I would like.) Too bad there is no more "Ask a Volcanologist"
column. I would have liked to ask some questions after acquiring
basic knowledge.

I'm a keen amateur and have been fascinated by Volcanoes since I was
about ten years old. Finding this site was great and I'm sure I will be a regular

Adding a little soap made all the difference! Thanks!

- On March 7, 2000 Louise commented:
I recently visited the Timanfaya National Park on the Island of
Lanzarote. Being from the south of England where everything is green,
seeing the park is like seeing an alien world. The lava fields went on
for miles. There were no people or trees, plants or animals. To be honest
if like I, you never really knew anything about volcanic regions, seeing as
site like that can be quite frighting. I'm glad I did experience that
because you can really learn a lot. Volcanologists have earned my respect.
- On March 6, 2000 Dorothy commented:
I would like to say thanks for one of the best sites on the Web. I am a
Grade 3/4 teacher in Melbourne, Australia and my students are using your
site daily to update us on any current volcanic activity around the globe.
We only have two computers in our class so I said to the kids whoever comes
first in the morning can access the site for any updates. Well as you can
imagine, I now have quite a few students banging on the classroom door at
8:30 a.m. wishing to access the site for any news. The kids have spent
several lessons browsing through the site answering questions on volcanoes.
As a teacher I have found the site to be a valuable teaching and learning
tool. The information on how to make a volcano was excellent. At our school,
we have four Grade 3/4 classes and you can be assured that we are all using
VolcanoWorld regularly to assist in our lessons. Well done on a great site.
- On February 25, 2000 John commented:
Ran across your site as listed in Popular Science's 50 Best Web sites,
so I thought I'd see if there was any news about "My Own" volcano (Mayon).
And there was--a big eruption yesterday. I grew up at the foot of Mayon,
so observed several eruptions from 1938 to 1942. My dad climbed it at
least twice in the 30's--I dropped his ashes on top of it in 1967. It was
such a large part of our environment (no pun intended) when I was a kid
that I'm always interested in it.

- On February 4, 2000 Samantha commented:
I am a recent graduate in Geology from Anglia Polytechnic University
in Cambridge. Throughout my course, my main interest revolved around
volcanoes and "hard rock" geology. With my course, I visited Mt. Etna
and Stromboli, and my dissertation subject was the extinct volcano of
Montana Roja, Lanzarote. The active ones are definitely the best. This
is the first time I have visted your site and have found it an
exhilerating experience. There is so much information I will have to
keep coming back to keep up with it all. I would definitely love to
be a volcanologist.
- On February 2, 2000 Amileia commented:
I am a student doing my GCSE's. My teacher gave me this web address,
because I wasn't understanding much about plate tectonics and volcanoes.
Since coming on this site, I now understand it all, and it is one of my
"favourites." I would like to say thanx very much to the people who made
this site, as it has helped me to have a better understanding, which
I am sure in turn will help me get a better grade.
- On January 25, 2000 Yves commented:
Thanks a lot for your outstanding and fascinating Web site. I have seen
many volcanes, either in activity or still asleep as la Chaine des Puys
(France), la Montagne Pelee (Martinica), or the northwestern Saudi Arabian
volcanoes close to the Gulf of Aqaba. I remember also how anxious I was
at the top of both Vesuvio (Italy) and Etna (Sicily/Italy). I saw many
other "mountains of fire" which are always questioning us upon our
insignificant presence on Earth. Your Web site contributes to enlarge the
human conscious on the absolute necessity to respect and understand the
mysteries of nature. This, for the best benefit of all. Bravo pur votre
formidable travail de documentation!
- On January 19, 2000 Carol commented:
This is an absolutely fabulous site. My grade 8 class in Ontario Canada is
studying "global issues" and part of that study involves understanding
how we each have an effect on everyone else in the world. One of the poems
that we read talks about the ash from Krakatoa being in the tea that
comes from China and this sent them on a search mission about volcanoes. I
used to live in British Columbia and in 1980, the ash was abundant from
the Mt. St. Helens eruption. This caught their attention and I think that we
are now off on a "tangent"!!
- On December 31, 1999 David commented:
This is a terrific site! I am a teacher, and my class will be using

Hi, I came into your Web site with my science class. I find the part
on the volcanoes very interesting. I like to know about things going on
and about history! I think your Web site is very interesting and it is
very good for research projects. I like your Web site and next time I
come on I hope the Ask-A-Volcanologist is working. Thank you!
- On December 5, 1999 Sandra commented:
We studied volcanoes for two weeks and learned many interesting facts
from books, a video, an experiment, and your Web site. Each of us wrote
a news bulletin detailing the explosion of an imaginary volcano. We wrote
the news bulletin, created our own volcanic background image to stand
in front of and our teacher video taped each of our reports. We enjoyed the
study of volcanoes and appreciated the information given on your site.

- On November 16, 1999 Sara from Finland commented:
Hello! I noticed you don't have the Finnish spelling for a volcano in
your list of different languages. It's a pity, because our language is
so different from the indo-european languages that it would be
interesting to compare with them. The Finnish spelling for "volcano" is
TULIVUORI, and this is directly translated as "fire mountain." Best
wishes, your site is magnificent!
Thank you, Sara!

reappear after a volcanic eruption. I am impressed with the amount of
information I found. I was also impressed with the kindness and attention

Great site.
I wish that we (my wife and I) had found the site before we had traveled
there. We traveled to Mt. Ranier first, I have seen a lot of sites in the
past, but Ranier tops them all. We next went to St. Helens and that is
an awesome site, pictures do not give the impression that being there does.
We visited Mt. Hood and continued down to Crater Lake. Let me say Crater
Lake is one great site, but we were there during a thunderstorm and that
was really interesting.

Me and my classmates visited your page, and we all had the same number
for Visitor of the Month. I tell you I am not pleased with this situation.
Please fix it.
The counter on our homepage is updated once a day at midnight. The reason
for this delay is that we don't count the number of "hits" each day, but
rather the number of distinct visitors. In other words, if you visit our
site 5 times in a 24 hour period, it will only be counted once. Last month,
we received over 10 million hits and in the neighborhood of 200,000 visitors.

My son has learning disabilities but he found your site very simple to navigate
and very informative. He had a project to do for Earth Science on volcanoes and
was very pleased with all the information he found here. The pictures were
especially interesting to both of us. Thank you for hosting such an easy-to-use
and educational site!

I went to this site for a science project. It had everything I needed to know
about volcanos. I even did a mini report on Mt. Etna. I found out how many
times it erupted in it's whole life span.

My 6 year old son has prepared a picture for your Kid's volcano art section.
Could you give me an e-mail address for where I could send it to as a
JPEG file? I can't seem to find one.
Yes, please send the picture directly to me and I'll make sure it gets
placed online. Thanks for the contribution! If you think his class would
be interested in having a project posted on our site, please let me know
and we can work something out.

Again hi to you, here's my second one...
I'm pleased to see enthusiatic people like you bringing such fine sites
as yours to the web. Thanks for your site, but...
I'm just an old fashoned european and i would like to see some other units:
degree "centigrade" instead of (or additional to) "fahrenheit"
and the same for "km" and "miles".
If you could do so, great.
That's a good idea. I'll pass it along to our Volcanologists.
Thank You,
