  360. Do volcanoes erupt during winter?

  361. Hello! When I go on vacation, I usually pick a few rocks and I was hoping you could share your thoughts on a volcanic rocks I have found. I'll try to describe it as best I can. One 12"x6"+/- specimen is a chunk of taupe colored, somewhat dense and grainy like fine sandpaper and attracting a magnet well. It has edges that have weathered but generally appears to favor flat planes (due to iron content?). It has numerous rounded cavities, some of which contain clear/white quartzlike inclusions from a few millimenters to 1". Other inclusions are yellow/reddish brown with appearance like jasper or ironstone. One six inch by three inch face of the specimen has a thin reddish coating similar in appearance to the colored inclusions. It seems reasonable that the heat of the matrix melted the quartz and the iron content colored the inclusions red and that when melted escaped through cleavage. I suppose that gases are a byproduct of melted inclusions, creating the round cavities that are thereafter distended round shapes as the volcanic material flows. What do you think? Is it correct to call this material lava, or is there a distinction between lava based on the composition. My specimen and others I have found are high in iron content (as hematite), but also appear to be silicated. Is the introduction of these silicates common? Are these inclusions picked up on route outside or/and inside the volcano?

  362. What is the status of this moment of the volcanic eruption at Monserrat? We are from the Public Health Department of the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribean area. Please reply urgently. Thank you very much.

  529. I went on a hike in a large national park in British Columbia, Canada the other day, and I came upon an old volcanic site. I noticed that the rock was very hot, and I identified it as "aa", because it was pocked with holes and hurt to walk on. I was wondering why the aa seemed to be hotter than the basalt rock that was lying in other places on the mountain. Anyway, I took a sample of aa home as well as a basalt rock, and heated them up in my oven. Then after 10 minutes my daughter and I dropped them in a glass of water each, and we noticed that the basalt actually held its heat for longer! My daughter and I thought that it would be the opposite. On a warm sunny day were we just imagining that the aa rock felt hotter than the basalt?

  548. In the history of the extinction of the dinosaur as presented todate, we have the meteor or comit hitting the earth at Yucatan area, having a sight about 6 miles across and rock formation that shows stress lines to reflect impact was cause. Also noted in creatacious period the earth in the present Gulf of Mexico area was underwater, due to rise of the sea floor caused by volcanic activity in the what is now gulf of mexico but at that time north and south american continents had not joined. Also sound underwater is amplifide many times over and indeed much more intense than in open air, in fact used as a weapon by some animals.
