Did scientists first begin to think that there was molten rock below the Earth's surface because of lava?

Hi Kristen,

I think that is a safe assumption to make. However, back in the early days of geology there were plenty of people who thought that lava precipitated out of a solution rather than cooled from melted rock. Certainly anyone who lived in a volcanic place (such as Italy, Japan, etc.) would figure out pretty quickly that there must be some molten rock under the surface.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
