Hi. We are from room 19 at the Birch Meadow School and wwe are studying volcanoes. Could one of you tell us the most dangerous part of going to a volcano eruption. How do you prevent yourself form getting covered with lava? Did you ever have a close call? Thanks from 3 girls in Room 19

Hi Birch Meadow, room 19,

Well, lava flows usually move pretty slowly so it is actually pretty hard to get covered by lava even if you wanted to. Of course there have been occasions when exceptionally fast lava flows have killed people but these are rare. If a lava flow was coming down the slope towards you, you wouldn't try to out-run it down the hill. You would just have to go sideways and let it pass by.

My closest calls doing volcanology have been almost getting hit by cars while working along the side of the road. That isn't very glamorous but I would bet that it is the same for most geologists.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
