How far can lava rivers travel without cooling down?Is your ROV made out of recycled things? Is the ROV the one that went into space?

rocky Micheal Feeley

Hi Micheal,

Lava rivers develop within lava flows but not right at the flow front. This means that a lava river (usually called a "channel") will be almost as long as the lava flow. The longest recent flow in Hawai'i was erupted from Mauna Loa in 1859. It is about 51 kilometers long from the vent to the ocean (we don't know how much longer it went out under water, but probably not too much farther). On Mars, there are some lava flows that are hundreds of kilometers long, and we don't know if that is because they were flowing extra fast, or they were extra fluid, or what.

I can't answer your ROV questions, I'm afraid, because I don't work with the ROV. Perhaps there are some JASON project people you can ask directly.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
