Hi! My name is Jason Quinn. I would like to know if any great dinosaur finds were fossilised in lava?

Hi Jason,

I didn't know the answer to your question so I had to ask Dr. Johanna Resig, a paleontologist in our department. She had never heard of any dinosaur fossils having been found in lava. She suggested that you contact Dr. Mertin Lockley at the University of Colorado at Denver. Apparently he has recently written a book about dinosaurs.

I do know that the disasterous 1977 eruption of Nyiragongo in Zaire managed to overwhelm a group of elephants (as well as lots of people). I've seen video of the cooled lava flow with the impressions of the elephants in it, and only the bones lying in the depressions. Kind of a horrible way to go for elephants, dinosaurs, and people.

Sorry I couldn't give you a very definitive answer.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
