How close have you been to lava?

Dear Christine,

Once or twice I was closer than I wanted to be. Many times I have collected lava samples using a rock hammer (so my hand was a few inches from the lava). If done carefully, it is fairly safe to do. I was trained and watched closely by very skilled geologists.
