When a volcano erupts what, other than lava is spewed out?

Dear Paula,

Two others types of material can spew out: gas and pyroclasts. The gas is mostly water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. Pyroclasts are fragments of lava thrown through the air. Ash would be an example you are familiar with. Have a look at the information of Tephra.
