I think the ash cloud could keep growing shortly after the eruption stops. The cloud grows from the upward force and momentum of the eruption and by ingesting cooler air adjacent to the cloud. Once the eruption stops the upward force is removed. Once the cloud cools to the surrounding air temperature it will stop ingesting air.
