Do you think there will be a major eruption at Mt. Ruapehu in New Zealand? Will they have to evacuate people in the surrounding area? How many people are there living close by?

Dear Jens,

Volcanologists in New Zealand still believe that Ruapehu may be displaying precursor activity to a larger eruption.

On September 29, 1995, New Zealand's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported that the eruption involving new magma was continuing at Ruapehu. They advised that the Alert Level for Ruapehu remained at Level 4.

The area surrounding the volcano has been evacuated. I have not seen a report that gives specific numbers on how many people have been moved.
