What is the current consensus of Popocatepetl? Is it likely that there will be another peak of ash emissions like the ones
last Christmas? Is there any danger for the inhabitants of Mexico City?
Dr. Gonzalo Pena Tamez
Dear Dr. Gonzalo Pena Tamez,
The current eruption began on December 21, 1994. Ash emissions were more
frequent and intense in February of this year. This eruption is
similar to other mild to moderate Vulcanian
eruptions at Popocatepetl that emit ash and steam. However, larger
eruptions occurred in 1519 and possibly 1663.
The volcano is being monitored by scientists of National University of
Mexico (UNAM) in conjunction with the National Disaster Prevention
Center.
Additional information about Popocatepetl is posted in Michigan Tech's
Volcano homepage and the homepage of the Volcano Disaster
Assistance Program (VDAP).
