Was the destruction of Atlantis due to a massive volcanic eruption?
Andy
Hi Andy,
That is a question that lots of people are still arguing about, and it
also involves the field of archeology, not my specialty. We know for
certain that there was a very large eruption from what is now Santorini,
what is now a Greek island. This eruption was big enough to have
devastated any civilization that had lived on the island.
Additionally, it involved the collapse of the volcano to produce a large
caldera. This would have generated tsunami around the Mediterranian Sea,
and could have destroyed numerous other island or coastal cities.
I'm not sure if archeologists have agreed on whether "Atlantis" was a name
used to describe the civilization on what is now Santorini, or perhaps
some other place that was destroyed by a tsunami. It is an interesting
(still not completely-solved) puzzle that combines a number of different
sciences to answer an old story.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
