When was the last major eruption of a volcano?

rockyC McDon

Hi C McDon,

Well, there are volcanoes erupting all the time. Of course those are not "major" eruptions (unless you happen to live nearby). I guess the last major eruption would have to be that of Kliuchevskoi (in Kamchatka last Sept.) or that of Rabaul (in Papua New Guinea). The Rabaul eruption started last September in a pretty big way, and then dragged on with minor explosions until about April of this year. Fogo, in the Cape Verde Islands had a good-sized eruption but it wasn't explosive so most of the world didn't pay much attention.
Unless I'm forgetting something I think those have been the most recent big ones. You might want to check out the Michigan Tach. University page (which you can get to through VolcanoWorld) for a more complete listing.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
