Hi we are fourth graders studying volcanoes. Have you ever been
near a volcano just before it erupted? If so, what happened to you?
Thank you. Bobby and Jessica in Room 21

Dear Bobby and Jessica,
Once, I was lucky enough to be on Kilauea volcano in Hawaii when magma
was moving beneath the surface in the flank of the volcano. The ground
was shaking, and at times vibrating, as the magma moved beneath me. The
ground was cracking open (only a few inches) and rocks cracking in the
walls of a nearby pit crater sounded like rifle shots. Unfortunately
(for me), the magma stopped before it reached the surface and I did not
get to see an eruption start. A couple of times I arrived at new vents a
few hours after they formed.
Thanks for your question.
