Does the ash from Popo ever drift over the USA and deposit?

rocky

Hi John,

I suppose that ash from Popocateptl could conceivably reach the US, but certainly these small eruptions that it is presently having won't cause that. I also think that most of the time the winds are blowing E-W or W-E so it is difficult for ash to travel north. If Popocateptl were to have a huge eruption similar to the one that Pinatubo had, then aerosols would get into the stratosphere and those could eventually get up north (but they wouldn't do anything except make pretty sunsets).

I hope this answers your question about Popocateptl.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
