Hello, I am Hannah. I have a question about the volcano eruption. Can eruptions of volcanos be predicted by water level and or temperature? Thank you.

Hi Hannah,

Scientists use many different methods to try to predict when volcanoes might erupt. One simple way is to measure the water level and temperature of lakes, just as you suspected. If new magma rises up towards the surface, its heat will warm the lake water, alerting the scientist that changes are occurring. If magma oozes on to the floor of the lake, the water level will rise. Unfortunately most volcanoes don't have lakes so this simple method won't work.
