How often do volcanic eruptions occur?

rocky West Seneca West Senior

Hi West Seneca West Senior,

Volcanoes are erupting all the time. Every month's issue of the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Network contains reports from 20-30 different volcanoes. For some of these the eruptions are essentially continuous (such as Merapi and Kilauea), whereas for others the eruptions only occur on average once a year, 10 years, 100 years, etc.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
