IN an 1811 issue of the Pittsburg Gazette it says that a volcano erupted in North Carolina at the time of the New Madrid earthquakes. Is there a basis for such a statement?

rocky Dianne

Hi Dianne,

No scientific basis . . . but it does illustrate that people associate one natural disaster (an unusual swarm of earthquakes) with another (a volcanic eruption in North Carolina). But there was no volcanic eruption in North Carolina in the last 100 million years.

Sincerely,
John Dvorak
