Polynesians and Westerns have very different views of the world. To a westerner, nature is something to be protected from and something to control. To a polynesian, you are part of nature and nature has its own will. Pele symbolizes the Polynesian view. Is Pele dead? Belief in Pele is very strong on the island of Hawaii. Some people trace their ancestry back to Pele. Pele was brought to Hawaii from Tahiti, possibly from the island of Bora Bora, in about the 13th century A.D. Pele may have actually been a real person (or people) who was later deified. She is not dead.
