Popocatepetl refers to a man in Aztec mythology.
Popocatepetl (the male) was forced to go to war and leave behind Iataccihuatl (the female). When he returned, Iztacoihuatl had died. To reduce his grief, Popocatepetl covered her with a white shroud (snow) and has been watching over her and protecting her ever since.
