I was wondering what some folklore behind Mauna Loa is?

rocky Megan

Hi Megan,

I'm sure there must be some folklore about Mauna Loa but I only know one particuar story. It is about a couple of littoral cones down ont he Sw coastline of Mauna Loa. (littoral cones form from the explosions that occur when some lava flows enter the ocean).

There were once two brothers who were skilled at riding Hawaiian sleds (not on snow, on ramps lined with grass). Along came a young woman who challenged them to a race. They didn't recognize her but agreed to race anyway. She turned out to be pretty good so they kept racing a few times. Pretty soon they figured out that she was Pele, AND that she was looking at one or both of them as a potential boyfriend. Being Pele's boyfriend was kind of scary so they jumped on their sleds and tried to get away. She figured out that they were trying to get away and came after them, this time in her form as flowing lava. They managed to almost get away, but at the coastline she caught them and turned them into two matching hills. Today they are Na Pu'u o Pele (the hills of Pele).

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
