There is a famous epic about Pele and Hi'iaka that describes a journey in which Pele sends her younger sister to Kauai to bring back Pele's lover. Some people interpret that epic as describing the transition of a young girl (Hi'iaka) into a woman. Hi'iaka is not only associated with hula (through Hopoe), but also associated with the forest. It is a very involved mythology, on par with the complexity of the stories in the Old Testament.
