I am in the fourth grade in Jackson, Ms. I am looking for
information on how to build a volcano for our science fair at school so
that I can show the effects of lava flow on the surrounding land. Can
you help me build a model volcano. My name is Elena and I am using my
mom's computer.
Elena Fougerousse
Hi Elena,
The answer to your question depends on how big a volcano you want and
what you are planning to use for lava. Probably the nicest-looking
volcano would be either made of paper mache or clay. If you work at it
you can make it look just like you want. If the clay one is very big,
though, it will be very heavy. For either of these two, you could then
pour water down the sides as pretend lava, and then paint the places
where the water went to illustrate the effects of your "lava". If you
are very careful you could also use melted wax for lava, then it would
even have the shape of lava when it stopped moving and cooled. I don't
know what the effect that melted wax would have on paper mache, but it
probably would work. Just remember to be very careful with the wax--you
can get badly burned with the stuf once it is hot and melted.
I hope your demonstration goes very well.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
