Did you ever see a volcano?
Genevieve Jackson
Dear Genevieve and Ermy,
I was very fortunate to live on Kilauea volcano on the Island of Hawaii.
I witnessed new vents form on the volcano, the destruction of forests and
homes, and the creation of new land and black sand beaches.
Mount Rainier
in Washington,
Mount Bachelor in Oregon, and Mount Shasta in California.
An interesting publication about volcanoes is Living with Volcanoes
by Tom Wright and Tom Pierson. To receieve a free copy write to: Books
and Open-File Reports Section, U.S. Geological Survey, Federal center, Box
25425, Denver, CO, 800225.
Perhaps someday you can visit a volcano. There are twenty active
volcanoes in British Columbia but none of them have erupted in this
century (five have erupted in the last 2,000 years). Or you could visit
the Cascade volcanoes in the U.S. If you really want to see an volcano
erupt, you might visit the Island of Hawaii.
Sincerely,
Steve Mattox, University of North Dakota
