If a volcano erupts under water why doesn't it turn to solid rock?

rocky Mitch

Dear Mitch,

I'm a bit confused by your question. Liquid rock (lava) does erupt on the ocean floor. The lava is called "pillow" lava because of it's shape. The outer rim of the pillow cools very quickly forming solid rock. The interior cools a little more slowly but it also forms solid rock. Sometimes the lava flows will fall apart to make a rubble deposit.
