I seem to have developed something of a fetish for active volcanoes, and
after
an 18 month round the world trip I climbed 36 volcanoes (mainly in Indonesia,
NZ and S. America). The experiences were so amazing that I have the urge
to plan
many future trips around scaling more of them (but only active ones!). In
fact
my real ambition is to scale every active volcano in the world - bit of a
substantial project really. Please could you point me in the right directions
to enable me to compile a comprehensive list of all the active volcanoes
in the
world. I believe there are somewhere around 550.

Dear Simon,
The book you need is
Volcanoes of the World
.
According to
it, there are about 1,500 volcanoes that have been active in the last
10,000 years. So, you really have a lot of climbing ahead of you.
