Dear reader,

Yes. The 1815 eruption of Tambora is considered to be the largest in modern history. It erupted 50 cubic km of ash and produced a column 43 km high. It caused beautiful sunsets and global cooling (about 1 degree Celsius). Crop failure caused widespread famine.
