I am doing a science project and I would like to know how acid rain can be caused by volcanoes?

rocky Kate

Dear Kate,

Sorry for the delay in answering your question.

Sulfur dioxide is a gas commonly emitted by volcanoes. It reacts with oxygen in the air to make sulfur trioxide. The sulfur trioxide reacts with water vapor, another gas commonly emitted by volcanoes, to make sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid gas condenses to make acid rain.
