Provide habitat to pioneer species.
Create economic mineral deposits.
Create beautiful landscapes.
Generate tourism. 

Cons
Destroy old habitat and crops.
Destroy cities, towns, communities.
Displace populations.
Kill people and other animals.
Disrupt commerce.
Generate tsunami.
