Hi. My name is Ben Moser. I am 8 years old. I am doing a school project on underwater volcanoes. I was wondering if underwater volcanoes are dangerous to fish and if so why? Doesn't the water stop the lava flow? If it doesn't, why not? thank you

Dear Ben,

Most underwater volcanoes are at mid-ocean ridges. The ridges are very deep and there is not much light. Fish tend to stay in shallow water where there is more light and more for them to eat. Volcanic eruptions underwater do produce lots of hot water. Water will slow down the lava flow by cooling it. The lava will keep moving as long as the eruption continues. The fish, most likely, will move to a cooler area to watch the eruption.
