How do the active volcanoes in Alaska effect air traffic, local weather, and the people of the area?

rocky Michael Tuzi

Dear Michael,

Good question. Ash plumes from eruptions pose a hazard to aircraft. Large eruptions in Alaska can force aircraft to take alternative routes between Asia and the US. I have not seen any reports about eruptions influencing local weather. Fortunately, most volcanoes in Alaska are in remote areas where population density is low. However, the recent eruptions of Spurr and Augustine were close to population centers. Those eruptions are their impact are described in detail on the homepage of the Alaska Volcano Observatory. You might submit your question to them for a more complete answer.
