Is it possible to tell if a particular earthquake has been caused by fault movement or magma injection into a reservoir? Might each type of quake leave a slightly different "signature" on a siesmograph?

Yes, these different types of earthquakes do indeed have different signatures. The problem at many volcanoes is that most earthquakes are kind of small so that their signatures are not really clear.
