Our class has been working on a project about pollution. Some of us are concentrating on air pollution. We know that cars, trucks, factories, CFC's and fire pollute the air. Our group has been looking on the Internet at volcanoes and found information about the eruption of Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand. We would like to know how harmful a volcanic eruption is to the air.
We know that ash from Mt Ruapehu exploded upwards to 6 km in the air and that volcanoes produce enormous amounts of heat, rock, lava, gases, chemicals, dust, ash and steam. Is it known how much damage a volcanic eruption like Mt Ruapehu will cause compared to all the different activities we do to harm our air.
Hoping to hear from you soon,

rocky From, Brendan, Josh, Amy, Carolynn and Tony

Dear Brendan, Josh, Amy, Carolynn and Tony,

Please have a look at questions 4 and 13 in Effects of Volcanoes in Ask a Volcanologist. Be sure to take the link to the NASA homepage (it has lots of information).
