Dear volcano world, what effect does lava have on land?

Dear Mark and Stephanie,

Lava will burn the plants that it buries. It also creates new habitat for species that live on barren land. Lava creates new land in two ways. It can extend the coast on islands. On any volcano, it adds a new layer which makes the volcano grow in height.
