MarcDear Marc,
The biggest danger will be the heat from the sun. Wear a hat and take/drink lots of water. The gases released near Halemaumau Crater in the floor of Kilauea caldera can irritate some people. Pregnant women, infants, and the elderly should avoid the crater. In general, if you pay attention to where you are hiking and stay on the trails you will be fine. It is an active volcano and the terrain is rugged. Where hiking boots. Gloves are a good idea because the lava is glassy and can cut you easily, if you fall. Have a good hike (I suggest Napau Crater and Kilauea Iki trails).

P.S. Mauna Loa is also an interesting volcano but much larger and much harder to visit (a long long hike at high altitude).
