Dear Beth,
"Volcanoes of the World" by Tom Simkin and Lee Seibert mention two Chilean
volcanoes, Llullaillaco, and Nevado Ojos del Salado, with summit
elevations of 6739 and 6887 meters, respectively. Llullaillaco has had a
reported eruption. Nevado Ojos del Salado hasn't but it does have active
fumaroles at its summit and is therefore probably still active. Both of
these volcanoes' bases are at elevations of at least 3000 meters above sea
level, however, so the actual tallest volcanoes from base to summit are
Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, each of which is about 9000 m high starting from
the base at the ocean floor.
