This is a question from Vaughn my 7 year old son. What is the biggest
active volcano in the world and old volcanoes near Maryland where we
live.
Vaughn Bryant
Hi Vaughn,
The biggest volcano in the world is Mauna Loa, here in Hawai'i. I'm
afraid I don't have the volume value with me at the moment, but as far as
height is concerned, the ocean around here is about 4.5 km deep, and Mauna
Loa reaches almost 4 km above sea level. It also has very gentle slopes,
making its volume even bigger. I answered this question a bunch of times
earlier so you may want to check the "previously-asked" questions section
of VolcanoWorld to see if there were more details in those earlier
answers. Admittedly there are a lot of questions in there now so it is
easy to miss those on the subject you were interested in.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
