Dear Tina,

Sima is the a petrologic (rock) name for the lower layer of the Earth's crust. This layer is made of rocks rich in (si)lica and (ma)gnesium. Sial is the a petrologic (rock) name for the upper layer of the Earth's crust. This layer is made of rocks rich in (si)lica and (al)uminiium.
