I watched part of a National Geographic special on volcanos. I noticed that in the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo they had different 'evacuation levels', level 4 being 'total evacuation." Can you tell me what each level is and how they determine them?

Hi Rayna,

I'm afraid I don't know what the exact definitions of the levels are. Remember that this would be the evacuation level for Pinatubo only, and it will probably not correspond to similar levels set for other volcanoes. This is because other volcanoes will have different slopes, different road networks, different expected sizes of eruptions, different people assessing the activity, etc.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
