What does Co-ignimbrite mean?

rocky Anonymous

Hi Anonymous,

Co-ignimbrite is a term applied to the ash that lifts off the top of a moving pyroclastic flow and then settles as if it had come out of an eruption column. This differes from more "traditional" ash fall units (that come from columns erupted directly out of vents). Co-ignimbrite ash layers tend to be finer grained but widespread, because their sources are not mere vents but rather the whole area of a pyroclastic flow.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
