What does the term "hybrid swarms' mean in relation to volcanic activity.

rocky Helen

Hi Helen,

I'm not exactly sure, but I think this is a seismological term. They talk about swarms of earthquakes when it is obvious that the earthquakes are occuring in groups. For example there may be a whole bunch of magnitude 3 quakes then a break for a few minutes then another bunch then a break, and so on. Each of these bunches of earthquakes would be called a swarm. As for the hybrid part I'm afraid I don't know. You might try the questions-and-answers part of the quake of the day home page, at: http://www.gps.caltech.edu/~polet/QandA.html#1

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
