What are the Phlegreaen Fields?

rocky Reader

Hi Reader,

The Phlegreaen Fields, also called the Burning Fields or Campi Flegrei, are in southern Italy immediately west of Naples. They are known as the Burning Fields because vigorous steaming has occurred continuously since at least 700 BC, when the Greeks established a nearby colony. The Phlegreaen Fields are actually an explosive caldera centered on the city of Pozzuoli (The birthplace of Sophia Loren). The caldera-forming event occurred about 35,000 years ago. Another major explosive eruption occurred about 11,000 years ago. ONly one eruption has occurred within the last 4000 years--a 10-day-long eruption that produced Monte Nuovo (the new mountain).

Sincerely,
John Dvorak
