Mount St. Helens is a stratovolcano. See question 1 (What is the history of Mount St. Helens prior to the May 1980 eruption?) in 6. Mount St. Helens in the Top 101 Most Frequently Asked Questions about Volcanoes.(http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/frequent_questions/top_101/Top_101. html) See also Mount St. Helens in Volcanic Parks and Monuments (http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/msh/msh.html).

rocky Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

See question 7 (What is the Ring of Fire) in 11. Volcanoes in General in the Top 101 Most Frequently Asked Questions about Volcanoes.(http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/frequent_questions/top_101/Top_101. html) We have a Glossary (http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/glossary.html) filled with terms and definitions. I predict about 60 volcanoes will be active per year for the next 20 years. Of the 60 about 10-15 will be in nearly continuous eruption. Volume estimates of lava are done by measuring the area of lava tubes times the rate of flow. For old lava flows the area is multiplied by the thickness. See question 2 (What is a volcanologist and what do they do?) in 2. Volcanologists or Volcanology in the Top 101 Most Frequently Asked Questions about Volcanoes.(http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/frequent_questions/top_101/Top_101. html) Sorry you didn't get a reply last time. Sometimes the email address gets fragmented.

Sincerely,
Steve Mattox
