I need help defining the following terms: 1. Co-ignimbrite 2. Column 3. Plume Also, can you please explain the meanings of light and dark-toned regions?

rocky Roxanne

Hi Roxanne,

Co-ignimbrite refers to the ash associated with a pyroclastic flow. It may be above, in front or, or beside the main body of the flow. It can leave a distinctive deposit. Column refers to the material (ash, steam) rising vertically above the vent. Plume is more of a general term for the column and it's downwind extension. Probably "light and dark-toned regions" refer to shading on an image. Think of it as the gray tones in a B&W photo.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
