We are doing a crossword puzzle and need a six letter word meaning: pieces of ejected volcanic material. So far we have T_PH_A. Any idea what this word could be?

Hi Rich,

How about "tephra"? Tephra is a generic term for anything that is thrown out of a volcano (as opposed to things like lava which flow out on the ground). Depending on the size, tephra can be classified into ash (very fine), lapilli (sand-to-pea sized), bombs (bigger than pea-sized to huge), cinder or scoria (particularly bubble-rich tephra of basaltic composition), and pumice (particularly bubble-rich tephra of high silica compositions).

Good luck on the rest of your puzzle!

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
