What action in the crust causes volcanic activity

rocky arkman2

Dear Arkman,

Actually, volcanism originates below the crust. Most magma is generated in the upper mantle, including that under hotspots, mid-ocean ridges, and subduction zones. Some monogenetic field magma may come from deeper in the mantle.

However, the crust doesn't have nothing to do with the magma. There are many examples where there is geochemical evidence that some of the crust was melted and assimilated by rising magma as it passed through on its way to the surface.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
